Michael Wayne Smith
The following article about Michael Wayne Smith appeared in the Groton School Quarterly in February 2006:
Michael Wayne Smith comes to Groton from Yale where he recently completed two master's degrees in organ performance and choral conducting.
His undergraduate work was done at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, where he was student conductor of the A Cappella Choir and organist/choirmaster at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church as well as assistant conductor of the Birmingham Boys Choir.
While at Yale, he served as Yale Divinity School chapel organist, Berkeley Episcopal Divinity School organist and choirmaster, and was a teaching assistant for the School of Music. He conducted the Yale repertory and recital choruses and served as assistant conductor of the famed Yale Glee Club, also directing that group's Chamber Singers. Upon graduating, he received prizes for excellence in organ performance and sacred music studies.
For the past three years, Michael served as organist/choirmaster at St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Old Lyme, Connecticut, where he directed the parish choir...and started a children's music program.
Michael is originally from Alabama, where his Baptist roots shaped his interest in a wide variety of musical styles.
