The Words From His Throne: A Study of the Cross
by the Rt. Rev. Charles Lewis Slattery, D.D.
"The Words From His Throne: A Study of the Cross," written by the Rt. Rev. Charles Lewis Slattery (St. Andrew's second rector), was first published in 1927, during his fifth year as Bishop Coadjutor of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts. Based on the Seven Words from the Cross, for Bishop Slattery the book fulfilled a twofold purpose: It served as a model for preachers of the traditional three hour service on Good Friday by treating these as the utterances of One who spoke not as a victim but as a victor, the conqueror of pain and death. It also provided for general readers the comfort of his interpretation of Christ's last words. We offer it here in the hope that a new generation of Episcopalians will find it as valuable today as it was when it was first written.
