Lent - 40 Days of Renewal

Sunday, March 26, 2017

Pink roses symbolize Laetare Sunday

The Fourth Sunday in Lent: also Laetare Sunday, Refreshment Sunday or Mothering Sunday
Laetare Sunday is a day in which the disciplines of Lent, while not being abandoned altogether, are relaxed. Pope Innocent III (1216) said in a sermon, "On this Sunday, which marks the middle of Lent, a measure of consoling relaxation is provided so that the faithful may not break down under the severe strain of Lenten fast but may continue to bear the restrictions with a refreshed and easier heart." As a sign of this refreshment, the clergy often exchange the penitential purple vestments for more festive rose-colored vestments. Also, click here to read about the traditions of Mothering Sunday.

Maundy Thursday
Today, we commemorate four events: the institution of the mystery of the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper; the washing of the Disciples' feet by Our Lord Jesus Christ; the agony in the Garden of Gethsemane; and the betrayal of Christ by Judas Iscariot.

Agape Feast

Agape Feast and Reenactment of the Last Supper
Come and experience the simple Agape Feast (or "Love Feast"), the traditional fellowship meal introduced by first-century Christians and modeled on the Last Supper. Agape reflects the love of God, and it is the kind of love that Christians are called to share with one another. The Agape Feast is as meaningful today as it was to the first Christians. Good Friday
Today, we commemorate our Lord Jesus Christ's long journey to Calvary, where He was crucified and died. The stark services today recall the moment of our Lord's crucifixion and death, which He freely chose for our salvation. Full of silence and meditation, many will find these services are essential to a full understanding of the Easter mystery.

The Body of the Dead Christ in the Tomb, an oil painting executed in 1521 by Hans Holbein the Younger. Now in the collection of the Kunstmuseum, Basel, Switzerland.

Holy Saturday
Today, the Altar of Repose is stripped of its linen. Holy Saturday lasts until dusk, after which the Easter Vigil is celebrated, marking the official start of the Easter season. In this service, the original celebration of the Resurrection, Christians gather in darkness to kindle the new flame, from which the Paschal Candle is lit and processed into the sanctuary. There, we recall God's saving acts toward humanity, from Creation to the Cross. Following this time of reading and psalms, the Easter Announcement is joyfully proclaimed and the mood turns from darkness to light as we celebrate with high solemnity the first Eucharist of Easter.

Today is Rogation Sunday

The Sixth Sunday of Easter, also known as Rogation Sunday
Today, we remind ourselves that we are the stewards of Creation, neither the authors nor the owners of it. Originally an agricultural observance, Rogation Sunday has been broadened and made more inclusive--the crops, the catch of the sea, the fruits of our labors in all their aspects.

Veteran's Memorial Cemetery

Memorial Day
Today, we remember the men and women who died while serving in the America's armed forces. One of the first observances of this holiday occurred in Columbus, Mississippi on April 25, 1866, when a group of women visited a cemetery to decorate the graves of Confederate soldiers who had fallen in battle at Shiloh. Nearby were the graves of Union soldiers, neglected because they were the enemy. Disturbed at the sight of the bare graves, the women placed some of their flowers on those graves, as well.

The parish office will be closed today in observance of Memorial Day.

Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Elizabeth greeted Mary with the words, "Blessed is the fruit of your womb." Mary responded with the song of praise known as the Magnificat, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior."
