Today is Shrove Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday, or Mardi Gras
Today is the last day before Lent begins. The word "shrove" is the past tense of the old English word "shrive", which means to obtain absolution for sins. In many countries, it is also known as "Pancake Tuesday, as it is traditional to eat pancakes - which use up milk and eggs, commonly given up for Lent - on this day.

Mardi Gras literally means "Fat Tuesday" in French. The name comes from the tradition of slaughtering and feasting upon a fattened calf on the last day of Carnival.

Wednesday, February 10, 2014

All are invited to attend Ash Wednesday services today.

The First Day of Lent, or Ash Wednesday
Lent is a time when Christians remember the 40 days and nights Jesus spent alone in the desert without food being tempted by the Devil.

Today is the first day of Lent, a period of fasting that lasts 46 days and culminates in Easter. In Christian tradition it is a day of repentance, and the practice of marking parishioners with ashes (sometimes mixed with a little water or oil) in the shape of a cross, usually on the forehead, probably has its origins in the ancient use of ashes in mourning. In this way, the participant expresses sorrow for their sins.

The Fourth Sunday in Lent, also known as Laetare Sunday or Rose Sunday
Laetare Sunday is a day in which the disciplines of Lent, while not being abandoned altogether, are relaxed. Pope Innocent III (1216) said in a sermon, "On this Sunday, which marks the middle of Lent, a measure of consoling relaxation is provided so that the faithful may not break down under the severe strain of Lenten fast but may continue to bear the restrictions with a refreshed and easier heart." As a sign of this refreshment, the clergy often exchange the penitential purple vestments for more festive rose-colored vestments.

Good Friday
Today, we commemorate our Lord Jesus Christ's long journey to Calvary, where He was crucified and died. The stark services today recall the moment of our Lord's crucifixion and death, which He freely chose for our salvation. Full of silence and meditation, many will find these services are essential to a full understanding of the Easter mystery.
