The Altar Flowers Calendar
The Altar Flowers Calendar for 2017 has been posted in the Peabody Room. Your gift of altar flowers can celebrate any event or honor anyone. You may provide your own flowers or ask Lynn Ferrillo, our Parish Administrator, to order them--whichever is more convenient for you. Contact Lynn with any questions at staayer@verizon.net. Next Sunday, please take a moment to sign up.

Need a ride to Sunday services or some other St. Andrew's event?
Bad weather making you nervous? Car in the shop? Given up driving? No problem!
We can help with weekly or one-time transportation. Membership Commission member Dick Dabrowski is currently coordinating St. Andrew's Share-A-Ride Program. Please speak with him at coffee hour after the 10:00 a.m. service on Sundays or telephone him at his home (978-448-3264). He will match you up with a St. Andrew's volunteer driver in your neighborhood.

The Rt. Rev. Phillips Brooks, Bishop of Massachusetts

Feast of Phillips Brooks, Bishop of Massachusetts, 1893
Today, we remember one of the great leaders of the Episcopal Church. Brooks's understanding of individuals of other ways and thought, and of other religious traditions, gained a following across a broad segment of society, and was thus a great factor in gaining increasing support for the Episcopal Church. His influence as a religious leader was unique. His death was a major event in the history of Boston. 10,000 people attended his funeral. One observer reported: "They buried him like a king. Harvard students carried his body on their shoulders. All barriers of denomination were down. Roman Catholics and Unitarians felt that a great man had fallen in Israel."

Today is Shrove Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday, or Mardi Gras
Today is the last day before Lent begins. The word "shrove" is the past tense of the old English word "shrive", which means to obtain absolution for sins. In many countries, it is also known as "Pancake Tuesday, as it is traditional to eat pancakes - which use up milk and eggs, commonly given up for Lent - on this day.

Mardi Gras literally means "Fat Tuesday" in French. The name comes from the tradition of slaughtering and feasting upon a fattened calf on the last day of Carnival.

Wednesday, March 1, 2017

All are invited to attend Ash Wednesday services today.

The First Day of Lent, or Ash Wednesday
Lent is a time when Christians remember the 40 days and nights Jesus spent alone in the desert without food being tempted by the Devil.

Today is the first day of Lent, a period of fasting that lasts 46 days and culminates in Easter. In Christian tradition it is a day of repentance, and the practice of marking parishioners with ashes (sometimes mixed with a little water or oil) in the shape of a cross, usually on the forehead, probably has its origins in the ancient use of ashes in mourning. In this way, the participant expresses sorrow for their sins.

Diocesan Spring Learning Event 2017: Our Stories Speak of God

the Rev. Hershey Mallette Stephens

This year's keynoter, the Rev. Hershey Mallette Stephens, will lead an interactive workshop in two parts: The first will help those gathered to learn about story, narrative and myth and how they function in faith and to consider what our stories say about who we are and how we understand God and the church. During part two, participants will engage their spiritual imaginations and learn how storytelling can redefine evangelism. Click here to read more about the Rev. Hershey Mallette Stephens.

Pink roses symbolize Laetare Sunday

The Fourth Sunday in Lent: also Laetare Sunday, Refreshment Sunday or Mothering Sunday
Laetare Sunday is a day in which the disciplines of Lent, while not being abandoned altogether, are relaxed. Pope Innocent III (1216) said in a sermon, "On this Sunday, which marks the middle of Lent, a measure of consoling relaxation is provided so that the faithful may not break down under the severe strain of Lenten fast but may continue to bear the restrictions with a refreshed and easier heart." As a sign of this refreshment, the clergy often exchange the penitential purple vestments for more festive rose-colored vestments. Also, click here to read about the traditions of Mothering Sunday.
