We can help with weekly or one-time transportation. Membership Commission member Dick Dabrowski is currently coordinating St. Andrew's Share-A-Ride Program. Please speak with him at coffee hour after the 10:00 a.m. service on Sundays or telephone him at his home (978-448-3264). He will match you up with a St. Andrew's volunteer driver in your neighborhood.

Today is Shrove Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday, or Mardi Gras
Today is the last day before Lent begins. The word "shrove" is the past tense of the old English word "shrive", which means to obtain absolution for sins. In many countries, it is also known as "Pancake Tuesday, as it is traditional to eat pancakes - which use up milk and eggs, commonly given up for Lent - on this day.

Mardi Gras literally means "Fat Tuesday" in French. The name comes from the tradition of slaughtering and feasting upon a fattened calf on the last day of Carnival.

Bring family and friends tonight for a delicious pancake supper. Everyone is welcome.

All are invited to attend Ash Wednesday services today.

The First Day of Lent, or Ash Wednesday
Lent is a time when Christians remember the 40 days and nights Jesus spent alone in the desert without food being tempted by the Devil.

Today is the first day of Lent, a period of fasting that lasts 46 days and culminates in Easter. In Christian tradition it is a day of repentance, and the practice of marking parishioners with ashes (sometimes mixed with a little water or oil) in the shape of a cross, usually on the forehead, probably has its origins in the ancient use of ashes in mourning. In this way, the participant expresses sorrow for their sins.

The symbol for World Day of Prayer was developed by the women of Ireland and adopted as the international logo in 1982. Its design is made up of arrows converging from the four points of the compass, persons kneeling in prayer, the Celtic cross, and the circle, representing the world and our unity through all our diversity.

Diocesan Spring Learning Event 2017: Our Stories Speak of God
This year's annual Spring Learning Event draws from the call in the diocese's new mission strategy to "deepen our relationship with God and increase our capacity to speak of our faith."

the Rev. Hershey Mallette Stephens

This year's keynoter, the Rev. Hershey Mallette Stephens, will lead an interactive workshop in two parts: The first will help those gathered to learn about story, narrative and myth and how they function in faith and to consider what our stories say about who we are and how we understand God and the church. During part two, participants will engage their spiritual imaginations and learn how storytelling can redefine evangelism. Click here to read more about the Rev. Hershey Mallette Stephens.

Pink roses symbolize Laetare Sunday

The Fourth Sunday in Lent: also Laetare Sunday, Refreshment Sunday or Mothering Sunday
Laetare Sunday is a day in which the disciplines of Lent, while not being abandoned altogether, are relaxed. Pope Innocent III (1216) said in a sermon, "On this Sunday, which marks the middle of Lent, a measure of consoling relaxation is provided so that the faithful may not break down under the severe strain of Lenten fast but may continue to bear the restrictions with a refreshed and easier heart." As a sign of this refreshment, the clergy often exchange the penitential purple vestments for more festive rose-colored vestments. Also, click here to read about the traditions of Mothering Sunday.

Good Friday
Today, we commemorate our Lord Jesus Christ's long journey to Calvary, where He was crucified and died. The stark services today recall the moment of our Lord's crucifixion and death, which He freely chose for our salvation. Full of silence and meditation, many will find these services are essential to a full understanding of the Easter mystery.

The Body of the Dead Christ in the Tomb, an oil painting executed in 1521 by Hans Holbein the Younger. Now in the collection of the Kunstmuseum, Basel, Switzerland.

Holy Saturday
Today, the Altar of Repose is stripped of its linen. Holy Saturday lasts until dusk, after which the Easter Vigil is celebrated, marking the official start of the Easter season. In this service, the original celebration of the Resurrection, Christians gather in darkness to kindle the new flame, from which the Paschal Candle is lit and processed into the sanctuary. There, we recall God's saving acts toward humanity, from Creation to the Cross. Following this time of reading and psalms, the Easter Announcement is joyfully proclaimed and the mood turns from darkness to light as we celebrate with high solemnity the first Eurcharist of Easter.
